Apparently LJ isn't sending out comment notifications? At least mine anyway. Dash you, LJ!

So I'm late with this meme, so I'm putting two days into one post. I'm sure you can all survive this change.

Day 04 → Your favorite book

I went round and round with this one. How do you pick one favorite book? Well, you can't obviously. I thought about reccing a random book I've loved, but then I got to thinking. Out of all the books I've read and loved, there is one that's inspired me to things others simply haven't. I took a whole course on this author's work. I spent endless hours obsessing over his work and its film adaptation, including traveling to meet other fans and people involved with the making of said film adaptation. I connected with some of my best friends over it. I even went to this author's hometown and cried at his grave over all the little signs of his fans and the way he touched their lives.

Ok, I'm sure you've all guessed what it is, heh.

The Lord of the Rings

The Harry Potter books were a real contender for how much love I spent on them, but comparing the works themselves, I like Tolkien better. I still love HP, don't worry.

I'm one of those people that read the books because I heard about the movies and no, I don't care what that makes you think about me. I instantly fell in love with the dreamlike quality of the words. Reading the book was like looking through a foggy lens at a beautiful world you could almost touch. That might sound sappy, but that really is one of the reasons I felt so connected to the books, through that sense of sadness that there was something so wonderful that I could only read about. I loved that it felt like reading a history as much as a story. Maybe the fact that Tolkien drew on so many Earth myths made it seem so familiar, I don't know. But I like it! And I like how each society he created was so real and distinct from one another.

I don't know...again, I could go on, but really, the heart of the matter is that they are wonderful books that I love!

Day 05 → Your favorite quote

This one needs no discussion. It's awesome is apparent.

Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read.

Around the time the movies came out I tried to read the books but all the copies were taken up so I ended up reading the Merlin series and The Hobbit, that was an unfortunate choice. I ended up turned off from the LotR's series for a while. I blame the fact that I was so young. I should really try reading them now that's been almost 10 years.

:) I like that quote, its truth incarnate.

Ahh, yes, to be honest with you, the same sort of thing happened to me. I started to read The Hobbit when I was about 10 or 11 and while I liked it well enough, I just never finished it. So I never sought out the rest of his work till later.

I totally recommend it. The Hobbit (if I recall correctly) is neat and cute, but Lotr is friggin' epic.

But even if you didn't like them, we could still agree over the vast truthfulness of that quote. *nods*

I know right? It's been my favorite quote answer for years because it perfectly captures my random sense of humor.

I'm not getting mine, either. Maybe we can blame it on the weather?

I think there was some kind of outage thing actually, oddly enough. My comments are still trickling in from the last couple of days. *shrug*
