A list

Holy crap, I haven't posted in a long time. I've been rather pre-occupied the last couple of weeks with household projects when off the computer and writing fic when on it. I'm actually pretty pleased with how much I've written. None of the fics I'm working on are anywhere near being done, of course.

So I have a lot of new people on my flist from a bunch of friending memes I did recently. So hello new people! Welcome to my goofy section of the internet.

Now, I've randomly decided to make my very own top ten list. Maybe even a series because I love lists of things. My first list shall be...

My Top Ten Fictional Siblings

Inspired by my recent obsession with Supernatural and Frasier as well as my own close relationship with my siblings

Quick Note: As always with me, this list is based on my current interests. But I suspect that these duos would be on the list no matter what; just possibly in a different order.

Also, just in case anyone was wondering, incest is a huge squick for me, so this is a decidedly non-shippy list.

10. Linus and Lucy van Pelt, Peanuts

These two crack me up. Lucy is the perfect stereotype of the bossy overbearing older sibling and Linus is the sweet sensitive kid trying to figure out the world. Plus, they have their own theme song. What's not to love? I chose them because childhood is when all these great sibling relationships are formed. It's fun to watch that in action.

9. Rodney McKay and Jeannie Miller, Stargate: Atlantis

These two are the most uncomfortable on my list. Their relationship brought greater depth to McKay's character, but they just hurt to look at sometimes because they spent so much of their lives hurting each other. They are a great example of hard-headed sibs who are too stubborn to admit they are exactly alike in so many ways. Even though I sometimes didn't like the way Jeannie treated Rodney, I had to admit that he was more than likely deserving of it. Watching Rodney struggle with his faults as a brother and finally come up with the right answer is always a delight for me. After five seasons, McKay and Mrs. Miller remains my favorite SGA episode.

8. Nathan and Peter Petrelli, Heroes

Chalk one up for the dysfunctional category. These two are seriously messed up, but underneath all that manipulation and distrust, there's genuine affection and that's what keeps me interested. No matter how far apart their paths diverged, you could always tell they cared about each other. And I have to admit, I love seeing a pair of brothers be so open in showing their affection through physical touch.

7. Ron and Ginny Weasley, Harry Potter

I knew I had to put some Weasleys on this list. I chose Ron and Ginny because they have always been my favorite two of the seven kids and the more I thought about it, I realized that the interesting element of their relationship is due to their close ages. My father and his two brothers are each one year apart and when that happens between siblings, the typical qualities of 'younger/older' sibling relationships are not as pronounced. Not that they are absent all together. Ginny has that whole snippy kid sister thing going on and Ron does that forcing his younger sib to get lost routine. But they are also equals in many ways. Neither is afraid to tell the other exactly what they think. Unlike a lot of the siblings on this list, they don't worry about protecting the others' feelings, even if they would do anything to protect the other from harm. Which is both hard and fun to read. Plus, I like the little family foursome they end up with when they marry Harry and Hermione.

6. Elizabeth and Jane Bennet, Pride and Prejudice

My favorite part of these two is the utter lack of jealousy between them. This is a sweet simple relationship, definitely one for the 'heart-warming' category.

5. Mario and Luigi, Super Mario Brothers

Together through thick and thin, goombas and koopa troopas. You need a friend when battling your way through the violent and bizarre mushroom kingdom. Sure, they don't say much during the games, but you can tell they got each other's back. And if you want to talk about the show, what's not to love about a pair of goofy grown men living in a messy apartment together and taking occasional trips into a cartoon world together?

4. Boromir and Faramir, Lord of the Rings

Anyone who knew me during my LOTR phase knows that the human characters were always my favorite and in particular, those from Gondor. I was instantly captivated by each separately and then by the hints of what their relationship was like. Boromir is the brash and commanding older brother while Faramir is the quieter and at first glance, somewhat less impressive younger son. But while everyone in the kingdom looks up to Boromir, it is Faramir with the real strength to lead. Another set with a lack of jealousy, despite the extreme potential for it. They respect and love each other and there's the added bonus of Boromir's protectiveness towards Faramir, which is always a favorite with me. I could go on and on, but I'll just end by saying that this relationship is one of the best bits of the entire LOTR series for me.

3. Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa, Star Wars

It's always good to have a set of siblings separated at birth. Not growing up together didn't seem to affect that special sibling relationship. I enjoy the implication of an almost supernatural connection between siblings that draws Luke and Leia together, despite being unaware of their true relationship. It should be complicated, what with who their dad is and those few strange incestuous moments, but really, their love for each other is simple and solid. They've been a favorite for years.

2. Frasier and Niles Crane, Frasier

I put these loons so far up my list not only because they are hilarious, but because out of the entire set, they most remind me of my own relationship with my sister. Even with their bizarre quirks, Niles and Frasier are probably the most normal sibling set I've listed here. The writers came up with the perfect combination of rivalry, shared interests and dependence on one another. When Frasier and Niles worry about spending too much time with each other, I'm right there, wondering the same thing about my own brother and sister. But I know they are better together than apart, if for no other reason that they are the only two people in the world that can stand the most ridiculous parts of each other.

1. Dean and Sam Winchester, Supernatural

You knew it was coming, right? Yes, though it was very close with the Crane boys, the Winchesters are my current favorite pair of siblings. What puts them over the edge is not only my general obsession with SPN, but of all the siblings on the list, they are the only two whose relationship with each other is the most important in both their lives. I could talk for ages about their unhealthy attachment to each other, but we shouldn't forget how much they just like being together and acting like normal brothers with the pranking and the teasing. As complicated as this relationship is, it could have been a lot more angsty if they didn't genuinely like each other.

As much as I love these two, I'm also rather horrified by their relationship at times. How far they are willing to go to protect each other is frightening. One of the things I'm hoping the series does before its end is show the Winchesters learning how to let go and in particular, for Dean to learn how to define himself by something other than how well he protects his kid brother. Their relationship is the center of the show and I'm sure I'm not the only one who was hooked by their weird emo 'Winchesters Only' club. But the reason I love season four so much is that they began letting people breach the walls of their club house and it nearly broke them. To me, it shows how dangerous their relationship is and that is the reason I'm so fascinated by them.

Honorable Mentions

Mia and Maya Fey, Phoenix Wright

Snoopy and Spike, Peanuts

Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru, Inuyasha

Next up, I'm thinking of doing my favorite non-shippy friendships. We'll see!

Enjoy your day all!

That's a fun list - I'm a big fan of Niles and Frasier myself.

But no Don and Charlie Epps (Numb3rs)?

I do like the Epps brothers! Or what little I know of them. I've only seen a handful of episodes, but I liked what I saw.

I don't actually know most of these fandoms, but I had a great time reading the list. Thanks for posting, even if my list would have been very different! ;-)

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'm the same way; I'll read a list of things even if I have no idea what they are, heh.

Oh, I so love Boromir and Faramir! And Luke and Leia! Yay! And Niles and Frasier!

Fun list!

I forgot just how much I loved Boromir and Faramir until I was writing about them, heh. So adorable!

What a fun list! Thanks for sharing! :D I might do this as well at some point.

You should! I'd really like to see what others people come up with.

I like this list.
Glad to see some Weasleys!

The Weasleys were the hardest to write about...they came to mind immediately, but I hadn't thought about their relationship in so long, I was a bit puzzled at first...

Oh well, glad you like it!

A) What's a friending meme? If it involves adding new friends, which would make sense, I need to do about fifty of them.

B) See the post I just made earlier on my LJ.

A) A friending meme is when someone makes a post on livejournal and then others respond with a list of their interests. Others peruse the list and make connections based on who has similiar interests. The following is an example: http://absentdreams.livejournal.com/39714.html

B) As for Star Wars, yaye! I think we should watch Phantom tomorrow night, say around 8? I'll call ye about it!

A) I need more friends.

B) We just discussed this via AIM

I hate it when I respond to comments through my e-mail account and it acts as though I'm already logged into LJ when I'm not. Then I end up commenting anonymously. It's like I'm a Gand that hasn't achieved enough prestige in life to have an actual name.

Instead of "anonymous" it should just say "gand."

I just e-mailed this message to you as well. Evidently I had forgotten about the 8 pm time slot, but I'll probably be back home by then:

I'll be going to my aunt's in about an hour or so and will probably be out there for a few hours. But I'll be back some time in the early or late evening. I figured that we wouldn't watch Phantom until around 9 or 10 anyway.
